- The True Meaning of Fitness
Fitness Class The True Meaning of Fitness Being physically fit is an invaluable asset, which is why the fitness industry is one of the largest in the world, valued at nearly $100 billion. As health and wellness continue to take center stage in people's lives, physical fitness has become a key aspiration. It is often spoken of as if it were an invisible threshold—exercise enough, and you will be "fit." While there is some truth to this notion, fitness is a broad and complex term with different definitions depending on context and individual perspectives. Many people reduce fitness to physical appearance, but body composition is just one aspect of the bigger picture. What Is Fitness? What does it truly mean to be fit? How can we define fitness in a way that encourages participation and aligns with our lifestyles? What are the different types of fitness? When discussing fitness, we typically refer to physical fitness. However, fitness extends beyond physical attributes to include skill-related fitness, nutritional fitness, and even mental and emotional well-being. True wellness is not just about how many squats we can do but about our overall ability to function and thrive. The Core Components of Physical Fitness Physical fitness can be categorized into four main components: Cardiovascular Fitness Cardiovascular fitness refers to the body's ability to process and utilize oxygen efficiently. It measures how well the heart and lungs deliver oxygen to the muscles during movement. Activities like running, swimming, cycling, and most sports help develop cardiovascular endurance. Muscular Strength Strength relates to the amount of force a muscle can exert. It depends on specific muscle fibers that grow in response to resistance training. Developing muscular strength allows us to lift heavier weights and perform physically demanding tasks. Muscular Endurance This refers to the ability of muscles to sustain effort over time without fatigue. Unlike strength, which focuses on maximum force, endurance is about how long muscles can perform a task. Activities such as long-distance running, cycling, and high-repetition resistance training enhance muscular endurance. Flexibility & Mobility Flexibility is the ability of muscles to stretch, while mobility refers to the range of motion within a joint. Often neglected, these components are crucial for movement efficiency and injury prevention. Maintaining flexibility and mobility allows for better performance in all other fitness areas. It's important to recognize that different fitness components interact. Most activities improve multiple aspects of fitness. For example, yoga enhances flexibility, muscular endurance, and strength, while a HIIT session challenges cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance. Defining Fitness for Yourself At what point can we consider ourselves fit? The answer is highly individual. Fitness levels vary based on age, gender, lifestyle, and personal goals. The NHS recommends that adults between 19-64 engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. However, what is considered "intense" varies from person to person. For a professional athlete, fitness means qualifying for the Olympics. For a beginner marathon runner, it means completing 26.2 miles. While striving for improvement is great, it's also essential to recognize that fitness is not solely defined by visible abs or gym performance—it is a deeply personal journey. How to Improve Fitness Since we all start from different points, our paths to improved fitness will differ. However, there are universal principles that guide fitness progression: 1. Specificity Your training should align with your goals. If you want to improve endurance, focus on activities like running rather than heavy lifting. Even within a specific fitness domain, targeted training matters—for example, a great runner may not necessarily excel at cycling without specific training. 2. Progressive Overload Doing the same workout repeatedly without increasing difficulty will lead to stagnation. To improve, you need to continuously challenge your body by adding weight, increasing repetitions, reducing rest time, or intensifying your workouts. 3. Reversibility Fitness gains are not permanent—if you stop training, your body will gradually return to its previous state. Consistency is key to maintaining progress. 4. Recovery Improvements happen during rest, not just during workouts. Recovery allows muscles to repair and grow. Beginners often need more rest than advanced exercisers. Overtraining can hinder progress and lead to burnout or injury. 5. Individual Differences Factors such as genetics, age, and gender influence how we develop fitness. Comparing yourself to others is counterproductive—measure progress based on your own benchmarks. Finding Your Own Definition of Fitness Fitness should serve a meaningful purpose in your life, beyond societal expectations or trends. For some, it’s about achieving a specific aesthetic, while for others, it’s about building strength, endurance, or overall well-being. Some people exercise to improve athletic performance, while others simply want to feel more energetic in their daily lives. The key is to define what fitness means to you and set goals that align with your personal needs and aspirations. Defining personal fitness goals starts with broad aspirations—whether it’s losing weight, increasing flexibility, or running a marathon—and then refining them into actionable steps. This approach helps create a roadmap that makes fitness both achievable and sustainable. Rather than chasing an arbitrary standard, focus on progress that feels meaningful to you. Starting a fitness journey is often the hardest part. Many people believe they would be fitter if they had more time, a better routine, or easier access to exercise. However, fitness isn’t about finding the perfect circumstances—it’s about making small, consistent efforts that fit into your daily routine. The key is to establish sustainable habits that align with your lifestyle, so exercise becomes a natural and enjoyable part of your day. Fitness is not just about how much time you spend in the gym or how much weight you can lift. It’s about creating a healthier, more capable version of yourself—one that feels strong, confident, and ready to take on life’s challenges.
- Different Styles of Yoga
You finally decided to do yoga but after searching google you are confused. You didn't even know there were so many varieties of yoga. Yoga develops strength and balance, increases flexibility, all yoga styles create a feeling of lightness, comfort, and relaxation, but to get the most benefit and pleasure, you need to find a yoga style that suits you. Nobody came to the first yoga class that could practice advanced yoga poses. If you're already strength training, your best bet will probably be a style of yoga that focuses more on flexibility. This way you can balance your fitness routine, maybe try yin or hatha yoga. If you have a disability or a chronic illness, you can try Iyengar yoga or one-on-one sessions with a teacher where you can focus on your harmony and unique needs. For those who are relatively healthy and want to be challenged, the ashtanga vinyasa or vinyasa flow can be a good choice. A guide to the most common yoga styles 1. Hatha Yoga The majority of studios will have a hatha yoga class on their schedule. The most famous of the yogas taught in the United States is hatha yoga. Hatha yoga typically refers to a class where you explore holding postures and working with the breath to help you feel more relaxed and more centered in your mind, body, and spirit. 2. Vinyasa Yoga This is a dynamic and ever-flowing form of yoga that is literally a moving meditation. Instructors choreograph a series of yoga poses where every move is linked to your breathing and create a pumping playlist that gets your heart rate up. A good app for people who love to move. Practitioners should have some yoga experience as they do not linger in every pose during Vinyasa. It can be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with the basics. In most classes, practitioners don't linger long in each pose and the pace can be fast. Teachers often pump the music by matching the beats with the sequences of the poses. 3. Kundalini Yoga Kundalini yoga is a completely different style of yoga that you don't normally see when you go to a yoga class. For an experienced yogi who has never done a Kundalini style, he may still feel lost in a Kundalini class, that's how different they are! Kundalini is a spiritual style of yoga taught around chanting and meditation. Kundalini means "a spiritual energy or life force located at the base of the spine," and classes try to awaken this energy throughout practice, often spoken of as a snake. These classes are great for anyone seeking greater spiritual depth in their yoga practice. Practitioners feel a very tangible shift of energy at the end of these classes, something not normally felt in other styles of yoga. It is not recommended for beginners as it can be physically demanding unless the practitioner has a much higher level of strength than other types of fitness. 4. Restorative Yoga Restorative yoga is a meditative practice in which accessories such as blocks, straps, sandbags, pillows, and blankets are used to encourage the passive release of mind and body tension. This style works to passively release deep tension without active stretching. It may feel like you're not doing much in a restorative yoga class. Gentle, slow-moving practice with longer grips allows your body to experience deeper relaxation by giving your parasympathetic nervous system a chance. You will also use various accessories such as blankets, pillows, and yoga blocks to fully support your body in each pose. 5. Iyengar Yoga Here, you will be meticulous about precision and detail, as well as the alignment of your body in each pose. From yoga blocks and blankets to straps or a drawstring wall, accessories will be your new best friend and help you work through a safe and effective range of motion. Unlike Vinyasa, each posture is held for a certain amount of time. If you're new to Iyengar, it's good to start with a first-level class to familiarize yourself with the technique, even if you've practiced other types of yoga. Get ready to learn tons of information in an Iyengar yoga class. Unlike other classes, this type of yoga does not flow from one pose to the next. Instead, you'll dive into the details of each yoga posture, using accessories like blocks, straps, blankets, chairs, and even a rope wall to understand structure and alignment. This is a good approach, especially if you're working with pain (especially back pain) or other medical issues. It's also a nice introduction to individual yoga poses for those who are new to the practice or haven't been active for a while. 6. Ashtanga Yoga Ashtanga is for the rule-follower who wants a dynamic, athletic practice. A classic style and a series of dramas. It's good for people who like to do the same thing over and over. Like Vinyasa, you'll synchronize the movement with your breathing as you move from pose to pose to build internal heat. There are two types of Ashtanga classrooms: A teacher guides students through the row in led classrooms. In Mysore classes, you progress through the series on your own as a way to build your personal practice. 7. Bikram Yoga Bikram yoga is a special style of heated yoga. These classes work with 26 special postures in a room heated to 104 degrees. Bikram classes are more Hatha style than vinyasa style and can be incredibly challenging due to the heat. If you're looking for a great workout or detox for your body, this style of yoga is perfect. But not recommended for beginners. 8. Hot Yoga Hot yoga is similar to Bikram yoga, it is practiced in a heated room but teachers are not limited to the 26 pose Bikram sequence. While the heat will make you feel like you can go deeper in some poses compared to an unheated class, it can be easy to overstretch, so don't go beyond your capacity. 9. Yin Yoga Yin yoga is a practice that focuses on stretching to strengthen and lengthen your connective tissues (especially the fascia). The poses are held for 3-5 minutes each. Work with the energy meridians in your body and develop active stretching in your connective tissues to increase strength and flexibility, improve joint mobility, improve posture, and relieve trauma from the body. 10. Aerial Yoga Aerial yoga is a special style of yoga that uses silk suspended from the ceiling to support or deepen yoga poses. According to Yogapedia, “Airline yoga is a form of yoga that uses a hammock or yoga swing to allow students to perform postures that they wouldn't normally try on a yoga mat.” In this lesson you will probably be turned inside out, hanging upside down in silk, which can be a really enjoyable experience but also terrifying if it's your first time! Some studios have a basic weather knowledge class or a weather 101 class that is great for beginners.

- 10 Health Benefits of Yoga Based on Research
With its roots in Asia, yoga is becoming more and more popular in the western world. Derived from the Sanskrit word 'yuj' meaning 'to join' and 'to unite', yoga is a combination of physical and mental disciplines that bring the mind and body together. More and more people are eager to practice this ancient discipline, which has many benefits from strengthening muscles to improving flexibility. The benefits of yoga are so powerful that whether you are a beginner or a professional, even a simple 15-minute daily practice can improve your physical appearance. To take a closer look at the benefits of yoga, we've compiled the ten benefits backed by research. 1. Builds Strength Lifting heavy weights isn't the only option for building muscle, as we think. A daily yoga practice can also help you gain strength and improve your appearance. Men and women who participated in a 12-week hatha yoga class showed "significant improvements" in muscle strength compared to the group that did not participate, in a study from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. (1) 2. Improves Mobility and Flexibility As you'll notice for yourself, improved mobility is one of the most widely recognized benefits of yoga. Whether you are very flexible or stiff as a board, you'll notice a difference in your mobility very quickly if you spend just 15 minutes a day in poses like the warrior and downward facing dog. You do not have to be incredibly flexible to practice yoga. The beauty of yoga is that it can be adapted and developed at any level. Researchers in the US found that male college athletes who participated in biweekly yoga sessions for 10 weeks experienced a "significant increase" in their flexibility and balance compared to a control group who did not practice at all. (2) 3. Improves Weight Loss If your goal is to lose weight, you do not have to exercise intensely every day to get results. After all, exercise is only a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to burning excess fat. In a study conducted by the College of California, it was found that overweight women who practiced one of the slowest styles of yoga, Restorative Yoga, at a very slow pace with long poses and lots of deep breathing, lost belly fat. (3)(4) According to studies, yoga can help with weight loss by burning calories, relieving stress, and supplementing other forms of exercise. Yoga increases feelings of fullness, awareness, and prevents overeating. It also makes you feel more connected to your body. 4. Supports Heart Health One of the lesser known benefits is that yoga is good for heart health. Research shows that yoga can lower cholesterol and even slow the progression of heart disease when combined with dietary changes and stress management. It also improves your blood circulation (5). According to one study, people over 40 who practiced yoga for five years had lower blood pressure and heart rate than those who did not. (6) 5. Improves Breathing Yogic breathing techniques (known as pranayama) focus on breathing from the pit of your stomach up into your lungs, slowing your breathing. It also sends a message to your brain that calms your sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the "fight-or-flight" response we feel when we are stressed. Research shows that these exercises increase the vital capacity of your lungs, which is the total amount of air you can breathe. (7) 6. Slows Aging One of the many benefits of yoga is that it slows the aging process while improving quality of life. According to a study by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, intense practice counteracts the cellular effects of aging. After 12 weeks of practicing , participants had less oxidative stress, less DNA damage, more BDNF (a hormone that instructs brain cells to form new compounds), more sirtuin (a group of enzymes that improves cellular health), and more telomerase (which lengthens DNA telomeres). (8) 7. Reverses Chronic Pain According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, chronic pain is associated with a decrease in gray matter in the brain, but yoga can help prevent or even reverse these effects. That's because yogis have more gray matter in the brain regions which are involved in pain modulation. Mind-body practices appear to protect gray matter in the brain, counteracting the neuroanatomical effects of chronic pain. (9) 8. Treats Lower Back Pain Research shows that yoga is just as effective as other non-pharmacological treatments when it comes to reducing functional disability from back pain. Due to our modern lifestyle, many of us suffer from chronic back pain of varying severity. Practicing yoga can be a solution to our severe pain. (10) 9. Corrects Your Posture Daily yoga improves your posture so you can walk straighter and sit more upright at your desk. In a study of 80 women published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science, a program of intense, short-term yoga posture exercises improved spinal mobility, especially flexion, more than any other. 10. Increases Your Energy From a spiritual perspective, it is said that a daily yoga practice awakens the major energy centers (called chakras) in your body. Postures that stretch the spine, like tree pose, are great for extra energy, allowing energy to circulate throughout the body. Postures that open the chest and encourage breathing, like Cobra Pose, are good for improving breathing. Scientific research shows that yoga can rejuvenate your mind. According to a study from the College of Waterloo, a 25-minute hatha yoga practice can "significantly improve your energy level." This is thought to be due to the fact that you focus less on brooding thoughts, endorphins are released, and blood flow to the brain is increased. (12) References: (1) Lau, C., Yu, R., & Woo, J. - What is Pilates
Pilates is an exercise method created by Joseph Pilates and based on the Six Principles: Centering, Control, Concentration, Flow, Breath, and Precision. In beginning, it was named Contrology or the Art of Control. The method was created in the 1900s and was developed during Joseph Pilates' lifetime. After Joe died in 1967, Contrology was renamed Pilates. Joe believed that you could relieve yourself of chronic pain and imbalances by moving with control, following a certain sequence of exercises, and using your breathing correctly. The method of Pilates focuses on core strength, flexibility, stability, and balance. A regular Pilates practice improves every functional aspect of your life. Pilates can be done on your own. There is a wide variety of books, DVDs, and online websites with classes you can use. Ideally, Pilates is performed in a studio where you can experience all the apparatus as Joe originally intended, but many gyms offer mat-only classes. Due to its growing popularity, more and more gyms are promoting Pilates equipment, as it improves clients' performance and assists clients experiencing pain, needing one-on-one assistance, or rehabilitating. A Pilates teacher is not a Physical Therapist unless they receive additional training. During Pilates training, you will do a wide variety of exercises that seem extremely unusual, such as The Hundred, which requires great deep breaths, arm pumps, and a very balanced, strong body position. The face is a warm-up exercise to ensure blood circulation in your body. You breathe clean air and you breathe stale air. You are working the lungs and diaphragm to their maximum capacity with your transverse abdominals. You're working every single muscle in your body, more specifically the Powerhouse muscles, which can be found in the shoulders and hips. If you act from a strong and resilient Power Center, you will notice many changes in your body over time. Pilates Mat Classes are only held on a mat, maybe a yoga mat. You can use some small accessories like hand weights or terabands. During these classes, you use your own bodyweight to provide a variety of muscle challenges that help you resist gravity while stretching and strengthening your entire body. This is usually a group lesson where you work in concert with other clients. Pilates Tower Classes (also known as the Wall Unit) use a variety of springs and rods that create resistance in a variety of movements, some of which you may recognize from mat class, and some very different. Springs act like your extra muscles and create resistance in various directions, helping you build strength, balance, and flexibility. At first, you will find it difficult to control your body and springs, but with regular practice, you will find that you develop more control, strength, and flexibility. This is usually a group classroom setting. Pilates with equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, and Chairs still follow a certain sequence of exercises but presents different challenges to the client as the fixed mat used in Mat Classes and Tower Classes is now smaller and slides on tracks or is angled in springs. thus challenging the customer. You focus on the same elements as the mat and tower classes, but the exercises on equipment, also known as the jig, require more contrasting and complex movements. For example, the Snake and Twist in the Reformer require you to extend your torso, thus engaging your body in extension and rotation, while bowing using a very specific breath to facilitate proper movement. Depending on how many bows are attached, this exercise may be a little easier or a little harder. There are many styles of Pilates and different manufacturers of Pilates equipment. You can go to a Pilates teacher or studio and have a very different experience than another teacher or studio. Which style and studio you like is a very personal choice. Feeling supported and satisfied with your experience is crucial to the benefits of Pilates, so wherever you go, you should always leave your class refreshed, perhaps even getting a full body massage. Every cell in your body should feel alert and alive.
- History of Yoga
It's been nearly 150 years since yoga first became popular in the United States. But the history of this mental, physical and spiritual discipline goes back almost 5,000 years. Over the course of several millennia, generation after generation, men and women have redefined what it means to be a yogi. Despite the diversity of schools, practices, and goals that have come and gone over the millennia, one thing has remained the same. This complex but beautiful exercise system has always helped people live happier and healthier lives. This means that yoga will continue to flourish all over the world. The average woman in America thinks it's okay to wear yoga pants to the gym, the grocery store, or for errands. And most Americans are familiar with several different yoga disciplines, including Bikram, Lenevo, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Lyengar, Kundalini, and Jivamukti. Yoga in Early Civilizations Yoga has its roots in an oral tradition; this means that yogis originally passed their knowledge from person to person during teacher-led yoga sessions, similar to what people learn today. Evidence also suggests that yoga may have been first developed 5,000 years ago by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in northern India. According to historians, the word yoga was first used in one of the oldest and most sacred books of Hinduism called the Rig Veda, which was written in an ancient form of Sanskrit around 1500 BC. This collection of songs, mantras, and rituals was used by the Brahmans, the highest Hindu priestly caste. But over the years yoga was fine-tuned and fully developed by Brahmans and Rishis, enlightened mystical seers documenting their practices and beliefs in another ancient Sanskrit text on spiritual teaching and Hinduism called the Upanishads. Around 500 BC one of the most famous yogi writings was created - the Bhagavad Gita. It is derived from the Upanishads and teaches how to sacrifice the ego and focus instead on self-knowledge, action, and wisdom. Fluid Exercise Keeping up with all these long-forgotten civilizations can be quite difficult. But the truth is, yoga is a complex system of physical postures and meditations practiced by many different ancient cultures over thousands of years. Each of these unique civilizations had different yoga poses and postures. As strange as this may seem, That most of our popular assumptions about yoga have been in the last 150 years. It is claimed that there are very few modern practices that appeared before the 12th century. Today, if you take a yoga class or visit a local studio, you'll notice many of the same popular poses, such as the downward dog, which is one of the most widely recognized poses. However, this widely known pose did not become popular until the 18th century. This example highlights the fact that the specific roots of yoga will always be a mystery, as different cultural groups have practiced their own versions of yoga throughout history. Therefore, many different people today can make yoga a part of their lives. Meaning of Yoga Like the many poses and postures, yoga means different things to different people. But most yogis agree that yoga is spiritual in nature. Although practitioners are not required to attend a church service, worship at a mosque, or visit a synagogue, spiritual themes are often covered in classes and come up in conversations about yoga. The word yoga is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit term "yoke" meaning to bind or bind. Therefore, the accepted theory is that yoga was created to unite the human soul with the divine, a connection that people of all cultures seek to achieve. In short, although yoga is one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophical traditions, practicing yoga does not necessarily mean worshiping Hindu gods. Instead, the more accepted belief is that yoga was created in response to the quest for inner peace and spirituality. While practicing yoga can do wonders physically, it was created to emphasize mindfulness and movement. Yoga is believed to be a way designed to help people overcome emotional and physical tension to prepare for meditation. Yoga in America Today Whatever the reason people come to the mat, yogis are enrolling in record numbers. According to research conducted by Sports Marketing Surveys USA and sponsored by Yoga Journal, about 8.7 percent of Americans practice yoga, which is about 20.4 million people. While that number may seem high, roughly 38.4 percent of those surveyed said they had practiced for a year or less, and 44.8 percent described themselves as beginners. Although yoga is as old as human civilization, the discipline is currently becoming particularly popular in the West. Today, when many people think of yoga, certain images come to mind. Possibly wealthy Westerners wearing expensive yoga pants, athletes immersed in holistic treatments, and savvy 20s trendsetters looking to tone or shape their bodies. However, the app covers much more than that. The origins of yoga go back to a time when people didn't write much and YouTube was unheard of. Rather, this beautiful doctrine is the product of a time people spend learning about spirituality and health in their quest for self-improvement.

Get your yoga mat on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/39r17mW If you haven't already heard of the Amazon Basics 1/2-Inch Extra Thick Exercise Yoga Mat then it's worth taking a look. With hundreds of reviews and a 4.6 star average rating, regular exercisers seem to really agree that this is one of the best exercising mats. But what about the features? This exercising mat is definitely thicker than most, and also longer than most! It is a plus for taller exercisers, some point out that the mat is too big and bulky, but most like the thickness and length. The color does not transfer like some super-cheap mats that eventually stains hands and knees when things get sweaty. When you make cardio with jumps, it has a great cushion for landing which is soft on the feet and knees. The extra padding will prevent you from hurting your knees when doing yoga poses like cat/cow especially on hard floors. It does squish slightly and leaves hand and foot dents momentarily, but it quickly springs back to its normal shape. Some reviewers mentioned the extra padding being a nuisance when standing on your feet in tough-to-balance yoga poses like the tree, while some reviewers mentioned better on their feet than the hardwood floor or thin mats. Has a good grip and doesn't move around or slip even when barefoot. Easy to clean, easy to roll, includes carrying strap to keep it rolled up and to carry it around, there is no mat with zero smell, some reviewers mentioned some odor, while some point out that it is overstated. Typically quality comes with its cost, as an Amazon Basics branded product it is worth your money.
